- We acquired this chair, along with everything else we could fit, into a van from an old warehouse type building … moreWe acquired this chair, along with everything else we could fit, into a van from an old warehouse type building in downtown Portland, Maine this past summer. Everything looked to be in very good condition, and a couple file cabinets showed that the last time they were used was in the late 1930s, judging by the latest date on the paperwork found inside. The style of the chair and the fact that it was with other pieces from the turn of the 20th century lead us to believe that it is approximately 120 years old. It is in very good structural condition and for the most part, it looks excellent. When it was found, the finish was a little rough and the fabric was greatly discolored. Multiple applications of clear coat were applied to the wood, leaving it looking very nice. The seat cushion still has a couple darker areas that we were not able to remove. There was not a great effort at cleaning the cushion as we were thinking that rather than ruin the fabric, it should be left alone and someone may purchase the piece that can take the cleaning farther. The fabric is in very good shape otherwise, with only a couple small wear spots to be found. The underside is in excellent shape, so it was not touched. The chair is nice and solid and sits level on the floor. less
