"MOHAWK TRAIL THRU THE BERKSHIRES - THE MOHAWK INDIAN"
Dark Blue 9-inch Plate, Staffordshire UK
This is a very beautiful antique dark blue and white plate that is borderline "flow blue." The plate is marked with the logo of Rowland & Marsellus, which turns out to be an import company/wholesaler in New York, which ordered designs (typically with a souvenir or historical theme) from various Staffordshire potteries in England for sale in the US. This particular plate features "The Mohawk Indian" and the "Mohawk Trail thru the Berkshires." The detailed rim shows a variety of images from the trail, such as the famous Hairpin Turn, in a cartouche design interspersed with decorative flowers and a blue and white border.
The plate is in fair to good condition, with no chips or cracks. There is a lot of crazing, most faint, but which has thickened in a couple of spots; the crazing is much more visible on the back side, where it has darkened and browned in spots. There are also numerous bumps and pits, original to manufacture.
The back has a very thick blue mark for "The | Rowland & | Marsellus Co. | Staffordshire | England." Rowland & Marsellus operated from about 1893 to about 1938. I think this plate was very likely made before 1920 because of the mark, but I haven't been able to definitively pin it down. less
