Circa 1750 English Georgian II Period Mahogany Armchair. The George II period was most noted for its intricate chairs. Like the other Georgian periods, this one was named after the monarch during the time. Under George II, mahogany became the predominant wood used for fine furniture. Many of the styles were symmetrical and had architectural curves, inspired by the Gothic. These works were very expensive and only the rich could afford and buy them. This specific armchair has a frame entirely carved from mahogany, which was a strong and durable wood that was also naturally water resistant and offers natural resistance against pests. The back of the chair has a splat design. Splats were an important element of eighteenth-century English chairs, offering support. It originated from the importation of Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs during the previous century. The splat of this Georgian armchair is in the form of a Gothic arch set upon Greek-style columns that are fluted and include small, carved elements. Mimicking the splat, the armchair has a serpentine top rail, which includes small, carved elements. Meanwhile, the back posts are shaped and elegantly fluted. Each arm is also nicely carved with a natural curve, ending with a swooping scroll. It sits upon square legs and is chamfered. Each leg is connected by a stretcher, offering more support.
The seat has been recently upholstered. Designer Stephanie Sarris chose this fabric primarily due to its decorative cube pattern. It is from Manuel Canovas, a Parisian fabric maker, in ‘Vallauris Taupe.’ Many Georgian period furniture features parquetry designs. It creates a look of elegance and sophistication. Made from a combination of polyester, viscose, and cotton, it is both durable and texturized. The gold color beautifully highlights and enhances the rich mocha brown wood, while setting an ambiance of luxury. Like parquetry, the cube pattern is a bit of an optical illusion, adding depth to the entirety. While the upholstery is modern, its pattern perfectly blends with period furniture.
