Tuscan school of the 17th century.A scion of an ancient Lombard lineage from Aquino (in the province of Frosinone), Thomas (born around 1226) went to Naples to study, and in 1243 entered the order of Dominican preachers against the wishes of his relatives, but on the way north he was arrested by his brothers and for about a year held prisoner. In the scene, the young saint in the center, already dressed in the Dominican habit, is surrounded on both sides by four richly dressed figures, precisely the relatives, including probably his mother, who hold him benevolently, almost embracing him, while with the gestures of their hands and afflicted and loving glances they try to convince him, almost begging him. The figures are moreover placed in a prison, as indicated by the bars at the small window on the right, underlining the coercive action performed.Rich and detailed are the details of the clothing of the characters, with bright colors that contrast with Thomas's dress, plastic movements properly in the Baroque taste.Already restored and re-tinted, the painting is in good condition, with evident cracks.It is presented in an antique frame that has been re-lacquered and re-gilded. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
