This is an exquisite large bowl by Michael Mortara. This piece was produced in the 2400 Farenheit Art Glass Studio located in Volcano, Hawaii. It is from his Mirage series and titled "Incalmo".
Mortara was born in Honolulu and earned a degree in architecture with a minor in fine art from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Here he studied glassmaking under Rick Mills.
He and his wife Misato have been making glass together for over 20 years. Their works are found in the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, The Contemporary Museum of Honolulu, The Four Seasons Hotel, and many private collections.
This bowl has a beautiful swirling effect not unlike the ocean. It would be a great centerpiece bowl on a dining table or just a lovely addition to any room. The purple and red meet in the center of the bowl in a textural love affair of color and movement.
