This antique, Old Sheffield Silver, George IIl coffee pot was produced in the mid-to- late 1700s, in Sheffield, England.
Measuring … more This antique, Old Sheffield Silver, George IIl coffee pot was produced in the mid-to- late 1700s, in Sheffield, England.
Measuring 12 inches tall x 71/2 inches wide from spout to handle, it is made in a wonderful Rococo design with foliate embossing on the body and lid. The handle is pear wood.
Although many Sheffield pieces were produced, few have survived in such great condition. There is one small wear mark showing copper near the base of the handle (see image.)
While this gorgeous coffee pot is clearly marked, it is very difficult to determine what these marks represent. That is somewhat due to the fact that the United Kingdom did not mandate Makers Mark registration (tax purposes) for Sheffield Silver, like it did for Sterling items. Some say Old Sheffield makers created their marks purposely to confuse customers. Our best judgment is that this antique coffee pot was made by Fenton Brothers c.1770.
This Sheffield silver pot was purchased from a Florida Estate in 2015. The Florida estate purchased this piece from a Philadelphia estate in 1994.
It is in excellent display condition, and with its exquisite detailing, and wonderful provenance, it would make an extraordinary addition to an antique Sheffield silver collection, and a beautiful decorative piece in your home.
