This minstrel figure in this tapestry was originally designed by William Morris around 1890, with background design by his associate J H Dearle. William Morris is well-known as the founder of the English firm of Morris & Company, whose workshops were established at Merton Abbey in Surrey. It is thought that this panel was originally woven by Morris & Co in the 1890s. From studying an old French Arts and Crafts manual, William Morris taught himself the technique of tapestry-weaving, and spent many hours weaving his first experimental tapestry by hand in his bedroom at Kelmscott House in Hammersmith, London. Morris thereafter taught his workmen the technique, and is thereby attributed with reviving the craft of tapestry-weaving in England during the last quarter of the 19th century.
This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
Composition: 80% cotton, 16% viscose, 4% polyester
Finish on reverse: This tapestry is fully backed with luxury cotton lining incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging purposes. See Hanging Options below for more information. less
