This tapestry depicts the elegant figure of Flora, symbolising the Spring season and fertility, amidst a background of swirling aristolochia leaves with birds and animals. The drawing of the figure is attributed to Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898), with the rich background and border by William Morris (1834-1896). This tapestry was originally produced at Merton Abbey in Surrey in 1885. The scroll in the top and bottom borders reads thus: I am the hand maid of the earth, I broider fair her glorious gown and deck her on her days of mirth, with many a garland of renown; and while earths little ones are fain and play about the mothers hem I scatter every gift I gain from sun and wind to gladden them The original tapestry can be seen at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, England.
This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
Finish on reverse: This tapestry is fully backed with luxury cotton lining incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging purposes. See Hanging Options below for more information. less
