This tapestry is inspired from an original design produced by the firm of Morris & Co, founded by William Morris (1834-1896) at Merton Abbey in Surrey in 1861. The Acanthus Leaf design was a favourite theme of Morris, and was inspired from the style of original 16th Century tapestries. The art of weaving tapestries had almost died out in England until it was revived by Morris. From studying an old French Arts and Crafts manual, Morris taught himself the technique of weaving, and thereafter taught his workmen the technique, and is thereby attributed with reviving the craft of tapestry-weaving in England during the last quarter of the 19th century.
This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
Composition: 52% cotton, 48% wool
Finish on reverse: This tapestry is fully backed with luxury cotton lining incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging purposes. See Hanging Options below for more information.
