To this day he is considered one of the most important athletes in the history of international sport. He won nine gold medals at the Olympic Games between 1920 and 1928, and by 1931 he had set a total of 24 world records over the distance of 1,500 meters. Nurmi thus became a symbol of the fast-paced, sports-loving lifestyle of the Weimar Republic and the then still young worship of speed and movement. Sintenis gave expression to precisely this attitude to life with her dynamic, well-developed study of movement. This means that every movement, every muscle of the runner can be traced without replicating them in detail. The National Gallery acquired the sculpture through the Alfred Flechtheim Gallery in Berlin in the same year it was created. less
