Gorgeous vintage blue glazed porcelain Chinoiserie Chic Shishi/Foo Dog/Guardian Lion.
Traditionally placed at the entrance of temples, palaces, and homes of the elite in Asia, Foo Dogs are believed to have powerful mythic protective qualities. You will get your own personal protector with this striking lion. Like the ancient guardians who watched over religious sites for centuries, this substantially sized temple dog is perfect for placing by a front door of a home or business, in a garden, or given pride of place in a home for a striking display that will catch eyes and be enjoyed. It would also make a memorable gift for someone special in your life.
This large-scale Guardian Lion was made in China, and is in excellent condition. Made of beautiful blue porcelain which is rare and especially sought after, and the bottom is felt covered for surface protection.
The classic Oriental guardian set with the male statue resting his paw on top of a embroiderd ball or power orb (symbolic of supremacy over the world), and a female statue resting her paw on top of a cub/pup (symbolic of nurturing). This is a female representing yin and protects the family and home itself- with one paw resting on a cub foo lion in a seated position. The fierce expression is thought to ward off evil spirits. She is beautifully detailed with stunning texture and amazing dimension from every angle. Would be gorgeous inside or outside!
