A British Postwar painting by Walter Brettingham (British, 1924-2002), depicting a convoy of naval ships likely off of the coast of Northern Russia during World War 2. Oil/board, signed and dated 1958.
I could find little of Brettingham's professional career even though it seems he was a professional painter and art lecturer. He appears to have a written book detailing his survival of the London Blitz and of his service in the Royal Navy, monitoring radio signals in North Russia.
In one of his war stories Brettingham describes a U-boat attack on a convoy he was on en route to Russia. It's possible that this painting is a reflection of his time in that particular convoy. less
