Master Printer Dan Welden enjoys experimentation. This vitreograph is an example of that. It is signed and titled with hand coloring. The image size is 17" h x 22-1/4" wide on 21-1/8" h x 27" wide paper. Vitreograph is a printmaking technique using a glass matrix instead of the traditional metal, wood, or stone.
Artist Statement: "I am an experimenter, an explorer and a seeker of beauty. When I set out to work, I don’t have an image in mind, nor a particular focus, but, my vision unfolds as the work develops. I am a process oriented person, interested in employing materials and techniques to the ‘landscape’ of my mind. I believe that my creative act takes place during my process, with no end in sight. My drawings, paintings and prints evolve from the idea of linear pathways echoing from the tracks of animals in nature, fissures in rock palisades and the patterns created by my hands becoming ‘playful’ with the tools I work with."
Dan Welden was born in the Bronx and received his BA and MA at Adelphi University. His art education and training came from the Akademie der Bildenden Kunst in Munich, Germany. Welden is a master printmaker and the originator of a technique called Solarplate. He has been making prints and works on paper for over fifty years and has collaborated with many artists, including Robert Dash, Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Jimmy Ernst, Dan Flavin, William King, David Salle, and Eric Fischl, among many others.
The course of his career has brought him to international residencies, where he conducted lectures and workshops in 53 countries. With 92 solo exhibitions, including his paramount show at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, they have brought him a “Lifetime Achievement Award’ from A/E foundation in NY. He was also honored with "Professor Emeritus" at the Escuela de Belles Artes in Cuzco, Peru.
Welden's work has been shown in over eighty international solo exhibitions in museums and galleries and over 700 group exhibitions in the U.S., Europe, China, Japan, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand and Peru. Welden’s work is also in many public and private collections throughout the country including the Amity Art Foundation, Darien, CT; Baltimore Museum of Art, MD; Portland Museum of Art, OR; and Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, among many others. less
