Lester Van Winkle was born in 1944 in Greenville, Texas. He received his masters degree from the University of Kentucky and later went on to teach at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia in 1969. Lester received several NEA grants and he helped to greatly expand VCU's sculpture department in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. His work has been widely exhibited in galleries in Richmond, Virginia, Washington D.C., New York, Turkey and Lima, Peru. Lester's sculptures are in the private collections of Sidney and Frances Lewis, Richmond, Virginia and the Louise Bourgeois collection, New York and the permanent collections of the Fine Arts Museum, Mobile, Alabama and the National Collection of American Arts, Washington D.C. The cast aluminum sculpture is impressed VW on the bottom. See less
