This is a set of antique engravings which were made by Jan Wandelaar for B. S. (Bernhard Siegfried) Albini's artistic atlas of human anatomy. Mid 18th century. These engravings are of the human muscular system. The engravings themselves measure 12 1/4" x 8 1/2" and are matted and displayed in newer silver painted wood frames measuring 19 1/4" x 15". Very rare engravings. Please note that I am selling these as a set and will not be accepting offers to sell them individually.
Bernhard Siegfried Albinus (originally Weiss; 24 February 1697 – 9 September 1770) was a German-born Dutch anatomist. He served a professor of medicine at the University of Leiden like his father Bernhard Albinus (1653–1721). He also published a large-format artistic atlas of human anatomy, with engravings made by Jan Wandelaar.
If you look at the next to last photo, you will see a water mark center top of the mat and warping to the upper left quadrant of the paper. There is another that has slight warping to a small section in the upper right corner, but no visible water marks. The frames show paint loss, as you can see in the photos. These engravings still display beautifully, especially when displayed as a set.
I do have many more paintings for sale, including portraits, so please be sure to check out the other items in my shop.
