Pictorial map of California focusing on the early discovery period, showing the paths of the explorers Cabrillo (1542), Drake (1579), Viscaino (1602), Portola-Serra (1769), and Anza (1774). Settlements and religious missions are illustrated, with the dates of their establishment. The Renaissance-style decorative cartouche (inscribed in Latin “Auctore George Otto Hanft”) is flanked by illustrations of explorers and missionary settlers, and the compass rose is surmounted by a fleur-de-lis.
George Otto Hanft was a California artist, graphic designer and watercolorist, based in California’s San Gabriel Valley. Born in Los Angeles, he served in the Navy during World War II, then graduated from Pasadena Junior College & Art Center College of Design. He began a career as a graphic artist in New York City, then returned to California where he eventually started his own graphic design studio. He also taught art at the Art Center College and Citrus College. A member of the Watercolor West society, he was also active in the Mid-Valley Arts League and served as president. He designed the entrance sign and official flag and logos for Temple City, California around 1990.
