David Hockney ( B. 1937 ) is an English painter, draftsman, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer. He is an important contributor to The Pop Art Movement of the 1960's. He is considered one of the most influential British artists of The 20th Century. His artworks have commanded greater popular acclaim than any other Contemporary British artist. The Pop Art Expressionist style artworks have been the subject of more than 400 solo exhibitions. Art works by Hockney are included the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
" A Bigger Splash " painted in California in 1967 is perhaps David Hockney's best-known artwork. It depicts a swimming pool beside a Mid Century Modern house, capturing a moment of a large splash of water by an unseen figure who has apparently just jumped in from the diving board. The composition is based on a photograph of a swimming pool and an earlier drawing by Hockney of California buildings.
Hockney first visited Los Angeles in 1963 after graduating from The Royal College of Art, London. He returned in 1964 and remained, setting up his permanent home there in 1976, spending much of the next forty years living there. Drawn to California by the relaxed and sensual way of life. He described it as " The Promised Land ". The sun-drenched lifestyle became a source for inspiration for many of his most important masterpiece works.
Jack Hazan's fictionalized 1973 biopic film, A Bigger Splash, concentrating on the breakup of Hockney's relationship with peter Schlesinger, was named after the painting. The original painting " A Bigger Splash " is held in the permanent collection of The Tate Gallery, London since 1981.
