At some point this painting has probably been cleaned, and prior to its acquisition by Hirschl and Adler it was apparently reframed and a whiteboard backing was added. The cutout of the whiteboard to show the artist's name for the painting was at an indeterminate date, probably later.. (See photos of back.). less

This impressionist painting is by an artist whose works are often compared to those of the better-known Mary Cassatt. It is known to have been featured in shows in New York and Paris. It was lent by New York's Hirschl and Adler Galleries for an exhibition at the Heckscher Museum in Huntington, NY. That show was billed in the New York Times on 2/17/1985 as "Five Women Who Pioneered Impressionism in America ." It is signed lower left, but is undated -- as are all of her works.
Anna Wood Brown was born in Westchester, NY in 1863. She attended Pratt Institute, from which she graduated in 1893 with a certificate as an art teacher. Her works even before graduation were featured in exhibitions in New York. Soon after graduation she travelled to France, where she appears to have done most of her painting over the next decade or so. Women artists at the time were taken more seriously in Europe than in America.. This painting probably dates from her Paris days, as it's title, labeled on the back of the canvas in her own handwriting, is in French, as shown above (translated: Study of a Young Woman).
Dimensions shown are frame. Sight is 25" tall x 19.5" wide. less
