This is a Beautiful Set of Early Early American Coin Silver Tongs. Circa Approx. 1840s. They were probably made originally as Sugar Tongs but Today they are More Commonly Used and Do Work Very Well as Ice Tongs. They are Completely Hand Made - Fashioned in a Classic Early American Style that includes Eagle Talons - Claws. They Have a Hand Engraved 3 Letter Monograms Possibly with the First Letter M, the 2nd Letter Possibly ? C and the Last Letter W - See Photographs in my Listing. They are Double Signed with The Documented New York Silver Maker Company Name AKERLY & BRIGGS as Well as Having Their Pseudo English Style Hallmark. They are in Very Good All Original Cosmetic and Functional Condition - Display Beautifully. No Damage - No Repairs. American Coin Silver has a 90% Silver Content - 900/1000 Pure Silver as opposed to Sterling Silver which has a slightly higher 92.5% Silver Content - 925/1000 Pure. They Have No Silver Mark but Note That All of the Silver Pieces that I Sell on Chairish are Professionally Tested and are Absolutely Guaranteed to to Have the Silver Content as Stated. They Have a Substantial Solid Coin Silver Weight of 50.00 Grams / 1.608 Troy Ounces.

The Early American Silver Makers adopted the Coin Silver Standard up until around the mid 1860s at which point in time they started to adopt the Sterling Silver Standard. American Coin Silver has a 90% Silver Content, and Sterling Silver has a slightly higher 92.5% Silver Content. Pure Silver is 99.9% Pure - That is to say that it Contains No Other Alloy Metals. Some of Pieces of American Coin Silver items that were produced were marked "Pure Coin" - but it should be Noted that many of the other pieces that were produced during that period Have No Silver Mark At All. Once the Sterling Standard took hold the vast majority of the Silver Pieces that were produced by Numerous American Silver Companies were marked "Sterling". All of the Unmarked American Silver Pieces that I Sell on Chairish are Professionally Tested and are Absolutely Guaranteed to to be Solid Coin Silver.
