This is an Original Mezzotint print by G.H. Rothe titled "Broadway Ambition", artist signed in pencil, on France Arches 88 paper. This is believed to be a rare artist proof of this print. The printed image is very nice with vivid color and beautiful detail. There is some staining/foxing in the lower left and lower right corners of the paper but does not affect the signature or image areas of the print, as shown in the pictures. I am told that a frame mat will cover the foxing/stain without distracting from the signature and title areas. Historic retail on this print exceeded $10k. Image size is 23 1/2" w x 35 ¾ h and frame size is 31 1/2" w x 43 3/4" h, framed with glass. The frame is in average condition with some wear. Please note: Local pick-up will include framed print with glass but an order requiring shipping will only include print sent in shipping tube.
G.H. Rothe is known worldwide as the master of mezzotint art and one of the best. In 1972 Rothe developed her own technique in mezzotint creating "transparency" with her art prints. Rothe Quote: “I carve my images into copperplates directly with a diamond. Then I pit the surface with a chisel-like tool called a rocker. When the ground-work is done, I use a steel burnisher quite extensively to shape my images as one would do in a fine barr relief but working in reverse. After I pull a proof print from the copperplate, I cover the surface anew with fine pitted holes using the rocker, eliminating thought in action, practicing Karma Yoga. The experience of layering images and the x-ray shapes is guided by the mind’s eye. I feel but cannot see the picture underneath the second layer of pits. As the essence of life is an unknown force, I see when I don’t look. ” less
