The chairs with a recently reupholstered gray linen upholstered drop-in set and seat back. Ht: 33.5" Wd: 17.75" Dpth: 22" Seat: 17"

These greco/roman, neoclassical style chairs feature a scrolled back and a dramatically curved sabre leg--a pattern which Gillows implored on several occasions around this time. Very similar in design is one of the manufacturers most iconic of their many early 19th century chairs--the "Edward Library", named after the Reverend Holland Edwards of Conway, North Wales who ordered a set of twelve in 1811. Other kindred iterations were supplied to some of the companies most noteworthy clientele, including Wilbraham Egerton of Tatton Park, Cheshire; Stephen Tempest of Broughton Hall, North Yorkshire, and also Prince Regent, later King George IV, for the Gothic Dining Room at Carlton house (S.Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730 - 1840, London, 2008, vol. I, pp.216-218). All manifestations with that very same, Thomas Hope inspired, ancient form--one which still feels strangely chic today. These, with their burnished gold and japanned buff treatment, are characteristic of the firms more elaborate and ornate late 18th century pieces--making for a particularly fascinating set.

The chairs have all been impressed twice with the joiner's initials "F.S." (clearly legible on one of three) and marked with roman numerals (VIIII, XI, XII)--a practice common to Gillows' sets from that era. A close grouping of the same time period with a similar scroll carving to the sides can be seen in Christie's, New York, 11 December 2018, lot 386. These chairs are also signed with the joiner's "FS".

The only noticeable restoration is a clean and thorough repair at what seems to have been a crack or break on one chair back. The crest rail appears to have been broken from the stiles and was subsequently glued/drilled on. This restoration is only noticeable under very close scrutiny. Please see image for details. All hardware featured on the chairs appears to be original brass otherwise. less
