Notes on the Piece:

For me, 3rd Avenue Golden Hour, aka The Building, is absolutely my love letter to Harlem, New York. It was the first painting I completed at the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, shortly after I lost access to my studio. So much of my sculptural and archival work had to be put on hold that I could feel myself losing touch with my artistic expression and who I wanted to be as an artist. I started to ask myself questions like: “what kind of art do I make when all of the fancy gadgets have been taken away?”

The painting is inspired by a photograph I took on Third Avenue in East Harlem, during a walk back home from Randall’s Island in February 2020. The bright yellow sun against Harlem’s unique architectural features felt hopeful and inspiring to me in a way I really needed. I grabbed paints and a small canvas I had lying around in my bedroom and got lost in it for about 4 hours. Painting was the first artistic skill I learned as a child and, although college taught me so many interesting new skills like sculpture and weaving, this return to painting – using these colors – feels like a welcomed return home.

It has been professionally scanned and printed so that each of the original work’s details and canvas textures have been preserved. Let me know if you find the bird. less
