A thangka, also spelled "tangka", "Thanka" or "tanka" (pronunciation: [tʰɑːŋkɑː), literally "thing that is unrolled", "roller", is a painting, a drawing, or a fabric on an original canvas of India and characteristic of Tibetan Buddhist culture. We find all the sizes, from the portable thangkas that can be wrapped and unroll by means of two wands passed in hems, to the monumental thangkas intended to be unrolled on a area on the side of the hill or on a wall in Thangka and which can reach several tens of meters in height.
The oldest known Thangkas come from a few sites in India, including the caves of Ajantâ (ie century to 5th century), in the center of India, then from northwestern China, like the Mogao caves (in Dunhuang , province of Gansu), on the Silk Road. In this second case, these are murals, as are later found, in the art of murals of Tibetan Buddhism.
The oldest Thangkas Tibetan on fabric are also in the caves of Mogao and date from the time when this region was a colony of the Tibetan Empire (629–877), they are dated around 781 to 848.
The making of Thangkas is one of the Rasong Arts, which bring together the arts concerning Tibetan Buddhism (painting, sculpture, embroidery, architecture, engraving). These were registered in 2009 on the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
