Fabulous artwork-inspired asymmetrical design handled serving platter handcrafted in the mid-century by California Originals, a pottery which was established in Torrance California in 1945 and closed its doors in 1982. The state of California experienced a boom in the manufacture of local earthenware pottery made from local clay from the 1930s to the late 1950s/early 1960s. At the peak of the boom there were 800 potteries operating in the Los Angeles area. By the end of the boom, most had sold their designs to foreign markets and had closed their doors, unable to withstand the mounting pressures from cheaper Asian imports. This beauty measures 15” x 12½” x 1” W/D/H; weight 2 lbs. 4 oz. Handcrafted from earthenware done in a cool creamy ivory hue; gilt accented maple leaf motif in the center with speckled gilt trim accents on the asymmetrical rim and handles. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear i.e. random crazing (see photos 7, 8 & 12) and a glaze pop to the underside (see photo 10) that occurred during firing when an air bubble reached the surface of the glaze and burst. None of which affect its beauty or utility. A fabulous mid-century accent piece that will complement today’s modern spaces perfectly or sleek dessert or appetizer serving tray to adorn your table at your next festive gathering!
