Literature
Between 1615 and 1621 Rubens painted a group of large scale works of hunting canvases depicting viceral scenes of human and animal conflict, which were inspired by works by Stradanus and earlier Flemish tapestries. These expressive and dramatic works were popular in courtly circles and were often commissioned by noble patrons for their hunting lodges. Ruben's fascination with exotic animals began at an early age when he began to copy engravings of animals and later, in Italy, made drawings from antique sculptures. He purchased numerous books on zoology in circa 1613 for further study on these creatures as he wanted his animals to be as realistic as possible.
