A hand-colored aquatint engraving dated January 1, 1825 and engraved by T. Sutherland, London. Titled "South Sea Whale Fishery", after a painting by William John Huggins (English, 1781-1845).
Auction catalogue information on verso. Reading; William John Huggins (English, 1781-1845) "South Sea Whale Fishery". Fine colored antique engraving depicting a whaling boat with several smaller boats harpooning whales. Engraved by "T. Sutherland" after a painting by W.J. Huggins, Published January 1, 1825, plate No. 66. Housed in a fine ebonized and gilt molded wood frame with ivory matte.
A prolific painter of ship's portraits and naval battles, William John Huggins served with the East India Company on board the Perseverance, sailing to Bombay and China in December 1812. On his return, two years later, he established himself as a marine painter, exhibiting regularly at the R.A. and in 1836, he became Marine Painter to both George IV and William IV.
