The British Raj was the period during which most of the Indian subcontinent, or present-day India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar (Burma) were under the colonial authority of the British (1858 – 1947). “Raj” is derived from the Sanskrit 'rajya' (“rule”). Our Raj chair was inspired by a Victorian High Chair used in Colonial India in the mid 1800s, and retains the distinctive mix of English Colonial style and Indian craftsmanship and materials. The strong frame is made of carved teak wood, and the visible parts of the arms and back are then covered in metal skin of copper, white bronze, brass or purest silver silver sheeting. The silver used was assayed at 96% purity, which exceeds the minimum standard for sterling of 92.5%.
