Fabulous artwork-inspired leaf-shaped console bowl handcrafted in the mid-century by California Originals, a pottery which was established in Torrance California in 1945 and closed its doors in 1982. The state of California experienced a boom in the manufacture of local earthenware pottery made from local clay from the 1930s to the late 1950s/early 1960s. At the peak of the boom there were 800 potteries operating in the Los Angeles area. By the end of the boom, most had sold their designs to foreign markets and had closed their doors, unable to withstand the mounting pressures from cheaper Asian imports. This beauty measures 17½” x 9½” x 2” W/D/H; weight 2 lbs. 12 oz. Handcrafted from earthenware done in a cool creamy ivory hue with random tan mottling throughout with gold gilt accents. In excellent condition with minimal use wear. There are random glaze pops that occurred during firing on the interior (when air bubbles reached the surface of the glaze and burst--see photos 7 & 8) and two indiscernible chips on the rim of the lower left side, none of which affect its beauty or utility. A fabulous mid-century accent piece that will complement today’s modern spaces perfectly!
