Tonalá is a city and municipality within the Guadalajara metropolitan area in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. Tonalá has a rich 3,000 year long history of being one of Mexico’s prolific producers of pottery due to the type of clay/soil found in the region. While eleven different types of pottery styles are practiced in Tonalá, the most well-known and popular is known as bruñido, meaning burnished, referring to the color of the clay. This lovely heart-shaped trinket box was handcrafted from bruñido clay, hand painted with vibrant complementary earth tone accents of a bird, flowers and other whimsical foliates. I used to collect heart shaped pottery boxes and acquired this cutie many years ago while traveling and vacationing in Guadalajara. It measures 4½” x 4¼” x 1¾” W/D/H (height is with the lid on); interior 3¾” x 3½” x 1” W/D/H; weight 13 oz. In excellent overall condition with a naturally occurring hairline fissure (see photo 10) on the underside of the lid which is unseen unless you remove the lid and turn it upside down. This is not uncommon to handcrafted earthenware and it does not affect the beauty or utility of the lid or the box. For a collector of heart-shaped earthenware trinket boxes, this cutie will be a great add to that collection of the perfect gift for someone who is.
