Wonderful mid-20th century splint flat reed and wood magazine rack, hand crafted by students in the Wood Studio at Berea … more Wonderful mid-20th century splint flat reed and wood magazine rack, hand crafted by students in the Wood Studio at Berea College in Kentucky. It measures (at the widest and tallest) 18&1/2” by 13” by 18&3/4” tall. Good condition, with some scratches and age appropriate wear, this is an amazingly sturdy magazine stand, which we have used in our home for many years. I emailed Berea College and they identified this piece as one that Wood Craft Studio students were making from the 1950s to 1961. For those of you interested in some history, according to Berea College’s website: “In the late 19th century, Berea benefited from the natural timber resources of the Appalachians as a ‘college and lumber mill town.’ Berea College Crafts put these resources to use and the Wood Studio emerged from utilitarian beginnings as an early cabinetry program. The Wood Studio provided tables, chairs and other furniture needs for College facilities. Since the early 20th century, the Wood Studio program has produced wooden puzzles and games, baskets, seagrass tools, candle holders and furniture. Wood Studio designs at Berea College feature Traditional, Transitional, Appalachian, Shaker and Colonial American styles.” less
