A nice pair of French art deco wall sconces in nickel plated bronze by la maison A.Richard. Made around 1935. They hold gorgeous cups in clear partly frosted pressed glass. These shades were made by the glass manufactory Etablissement Jean Gauthier and are signed Ezan France. The mounts are marked AR for A. Richard. A producer of bronze and iron lighting fixtures based 28bis rue Popincourt in Paris. The wall lights are 20,3 cm high (8 inches) and they project 27,5 cm (10,8") from the wall. The Ezan cups have a diameter of 22 cm (8-5/8"). The sconces are in very good condition. Some shallow chips around the hole for the socket which are hidden by the metal cups. I re-nickeled and patinated the mounts. The fixtures are rewired with American candelabra base sockets.
EZAN - Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first world war Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in moulded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J.Robert pseudonym for J.Gauthier based on the street name of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.
