A stunning French 1930 modernist art deco chandelier in nickel plated solid brass or bronze. The gorgeous mount holds five panels in clear frosted glass. This chandelier was designed around 1930 by F.Guiraud for Buiret-Debeaurain a producer of metal components for furniture construction and navy. Similar designs can be seen in the 1931 product Buiret catalog. The chandelier is 70 cm high and 36 cm wide (27,56" high 14,17" wide). It is in very good condition. Some minimal scratches on the inside of the central shade (see the last two pictures). The mount is newly re-nickeled and I rewired the fixture with six American candelabra base sockets.
Foundry Buiret-Debeaurain
The history of the Buiret foundry begins when Philibert Beauvisage returns to the village of Tully in the Northwest part of France after working in a foundry in Paris for many years. In Tully he started to produce locksmith items as well as fire pumps. In 1853 together with Charles Marqui he opened a larger workshop with iron foundry. In 1856 they bought a steam engine. Ph. Beauvisage died in 1862 after which his wife Elbanie Debeaurain ran the company together with her father-in-law and Zénobé Buiret. Elbanie and Zénobé married and the company was renamed Buiret-Debeaurain in 1866. They opened a shop in Paris where they sold metal parts for furniture buildings and the navy. After the first world war their son Joly Buiret modified and considerably enlarged the factory which by then spread over a 25 acres site. In 1930 Buiret commissioned two designers to create products like door handles and lamps in a modernist art deco style: E.Dekeirel and F.Guiraud. The chandelier on offer was designed by Guiraud. After the second world war the Buiret hardware store specialized in copper items for construction and navy. The foundry ceased its activity in 1987.
