Description: An original watercolor on paper painting by Robert E. Groves, British artist died 1944, "Two Apples and a Jug" still … more An original watercolor on paper painting by Robert E. Groves, British artist died 1944, "Two Apples and a Jug" still life, scene of two ripe apples to the left and in front of a highly decorated jug, all in front of a cloth drape sitting upon a woven mat, 7 1/2" x 11", signed "R.E. Groves, 1885" in the lower left corner front, CA number 3890, CA purchased from a southeast England auction house August 2022.
The far left apple has the initials "E.G.K." stamped into it. Possible an indicator of a one time collector.
The painting still has the original gilded matting, there is an inch long scratch in the bottom right corner of the mat. (It is rare to find a hand leafed gilded mat of this age in such good condition.)
The gold framing is original but Museum Glass, museum backing to the mat and the full backing itself have been added.
The gold leafing on the top ridge of the frame has been worn due to repeated cleaning.
On the reverse of the original frame was a label: "2 Nov 1911, Boots Picture Framing & Art Dept., no. 945/1Y". less
