A heavy bowl of the Ravenna series designed by Sven Palmquist for Orrefors Sweden in the 1950s. The squarish bowl has round undulating edges and is made in blue glass decorated with sandblasted square pattern and brown-red glass powder, overlayed with clear glass. Signed with company lable and 50 years aniversary inscription on the base. Maybe donated to employees of the company. An authentic piece of Mid-Century Modern Scandinavian glass design.
Sven Palmqvist (1906-1984) was a Swedish artglass designer working for Orrefors from 1928 till 1971. Among his several designs the Kraka Series (1944), the Ravenna Series (1948) and the Fuga Series (1954) are the most succsessfuls. The Fuga series was awarded with a Grand Prix at the Milan Trienale in 1957.
