Since the Ming Dynasty (1300s to 1600s), the Chinese wooden "Scholar's" Armchair has been a consistent favorite in Asian furnishing. Handmade of course, usually from solid Elm wood, the scholar's chair is characterized by simple Ming feet, an ox-horn top, and leg stretchers which provide a stable sitting chair with simple, elegant design.

These chairs take their name from their original use by academics, scholars, university professors, etc. whose prestige demanded furniture which subtly enhanced that status. Ostentation was not to their liking!

This particular piece is probably from a period 90 to 100 years ago when this fundamental Chinese style became quite popular in the West. less
