This is an extraordinary Pablo Picasso collotype with pochoir, titled "Weeping Woman", after the original drawing done in 1937. The Weeping Woman is a series of works depicting Dora Maar, Picasso's mistress and muse. The Weeping Woman paintings were produced by Picasso in response to the bombing of Guernica in the Spanish Civil War and are closely associated with the iconography in his painting Guernica. Picasso was intrigued with the subject of the weeping woman, and revisited the theme numerous times that year. The last version of the oil painting, created on 26 October 1937, was the most elaborate of the series, and has been housed in the collection of the Tate Modern in London since 1987. This drawing was completed two days later - Oct 28, 1937.
This is NOT a modern reprint. It is a vintage collotype with pochoir from a 1946 Picasso-authorized portfolio of his most famous drawings, titled "Picasso Fifteen Drawings", published by Albert Carman from an edition of 500. When you look at the series of 15 drawings, you can see the entire evolution of the artist from the turn of the century, to the mid-1940s, and it is simply astounding.
This is one of Picasso's most enduring images - an emotional and visual triumph. It is signed and dated in the upper right of the plate, as issued. We have custom framed it in a stunning black italian molding with a charcoal archival mat, and conservation glass. All top-of-the-line archival materials to keep this perfect for years to come.
