This is one half of a three-dimensional kashigata, where … Read more Beautiful antique kashigata, a hand-carved wood Japanese cake or sweet mold. This is one half of a three-dimensional kashigata, where two parts would be put together and the dough injected through a hole in the base (you can see the half circle at the bottom of the piece and the two holes on the top left and bottom right where the other piece would connect). This is very old, with some cracks and chips from shrinkage of the wood and worm holes. It was purchased at an antique store in the 1970s (note the collector's acquisition number on the back), and dates as far back as the mid-seventeenth century (or at least eighteenth century). The mold's shape is organic, a flower I believe (possibly an iris). The kashigata is already fitted with a hook for hanging on the wall. See less
