Trumeaus originated in 18th century France. Originally, they were an all wood rectangular panel with decorative elements inset above a fireplace. As glass became more available, it was incorporated into the bottom of a panel, so a candle could be set in front of it to reflect light in dimly lit rooms.
The design on the upper portion is applied paper of le garde-chasse, gamekeeper, with his hounds. Hand painted lettering in gold as well as applied gold on the frame make this the perfect accessory for a hunter or outdoorsman. less
