This " Art of the Real : Nine American Figurative Painters " rare vintage 1983 first edition lithograph print hardcover Realism art book is a very special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The hardcover book with forest green linen covered boards, gold tone foil embossed spine titles, and dust jacket is published by Clarkson N. Potter Inc. New York, printed and bound in Japan in 1983 by Toppan Printing Company Inc. Edited by Mark Strand, with a foreword by Robert Hughes.
" Art of the Real " presents the work of nine of the foremost American Figurative painters : Lennart Anderson, William Bailey, Jack Beal, Jane Freilicher, Alex Katz, Louisa Matthiasdottir, Phillip Pearlstein, Wayne Thiebaud, and Neil Welliver.
The New Realist painters each demonstrate a deep involvement with the traditional craft of paintings : concern with color, rendering of form, and modulation of tone and hue. They reveal a concern for process, and the painterly assertion of surface making these paintings accomplished and significant.
Poet Mark Strand, who has long been interested in these painters, has created an illuminating text from taped transcripts wherein the artists talk not only about art but also of their lives, their work and its developments, and the process of painting.
One hundred and eleven full color paintings and seventy eight black and white drawings, paintings, and pastels illustrate the range, style, method, and importance of these leaders of The New Figurative Movement in American paintings.
The rare out of print 1st edition hardcover art book measures 10 1/2" W X 11" H X 1" D, with 240 pages. It is printed on premium paper stock featuring 195 lithograph print illustrations, including 111 in full color. The black and white illustrations are printed in duotone, and the color plates in four color process.
It is in excellent clean vintage condition consistent with age, light signs of handling, and light wear to the dust jacket. Please see photos for condition reference. It is now being offered here for an excellent price. less
