American Art Deco hardcover coffee table book by A. Duncan Explores the tradition of the streamlined design and reveals how it was manifested in the great buildings, furniture, and merchandise of the 1930s. This book covers much ground, albeit in a generalized manner. Duncan's main contribution has been to bring together many different categories of artistic production, from architecture and painting to various decorative arts, e.g. silver, metalware, ceramics, textiles. Information is arranged in chapters on exhibitions, types of media, world fairs, and Industrial design styles in this century. American Art Deco is useful as a picture book (although reproduction quality is inconsistent) for public and school collections; academic libraries should acquire it work only as a visual supplement to more substantive texts.
Art deco architecture flourished in large cities and small towns throughout America in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of the best examples office buildings, movie theaters, hotels, and churches are still in use. Deco architects, artists, and designers drew on European styles but were most committed to a style that grew organically, as they saw it, from their native soil. Two themes bound Deco buildings and their decorative schemes together: a regional pride that tied buildings to their specific locales and functions, and a growing national symbolism that asserted the buildings' identity as uniquely, independently American.
