Pair of large Wedgwood creamware tankards with ribbed body to simulate the hoops of a cooper's barrel. Decorated with a brown painted crest of a horn. This is depicting the Pusey horn presented to William Pusey of the Manor of Pusey in Berkshire from King Canute 1017-1035.
Also decorated with brown ring at the foot and top rim - both inside and out. Impressed mark to base of one. Each measures 6 1/4" tall x 6" across over handle. Good condition - one with old interior rim chip - does not detract. Display beautifully and fully functional.
By tradition, the manor of Pusey was given to William by King Cnut (died 1035) as a reward for a warning of an impending Danish attack. The horn was delivered with the letter of tenure, and remained in the Pusey family until it was presented to the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1938. `Cornage', or transfer of land by service of a horn, was customary in Anglo-Saxon England.
