An antique hand-painted Russian Icon from the 19th Century depicting "The Miracle of St George and the Dragon". This piece is painted on a wood panel with egg tempera. On top of the panel itself, there is a lot of silver leaf work.
No matter how unreal, artists have always depicted dragons with a fascination throughout history. What's special about this specific icon is that it resembles the dragons represented/depicted in a German print from the 15th century, validating how the Russians had bonded with Europe during that era (i.e., international affairs, acceptance of European languages among the nobility, art, etc.) As such, George’s dragon in this Russian icon is from the European style of dragons in their paintings.
The story of Saint George, in short, is of a soldier who valiantly killed a dragon that was demanding human sacrifice from an innocent town. Icons of Saint George and the Dragon depict the saint on horseback from the side, sending his spear into a dragon, who lies curled up beneath the hooves of his horse.
