Jean Gauthier
A very large and extremely rare French 1927-1934 art deco pendant light in nickel plated bronze or solid … more Jean Gauthier
A very large and extremely rare French 1927-1934 art deco pendant light in nickel plated bronze or solid brass. It holds a huge globe in clear frosted molded-pressed glass. It is signed J. Robert for Etablissement Jean Gauthier. The signature is hardly visible to the naked eye. The heavy globe has a diameter of some 35 cm (13-3/4"). The total height of the pendant is 126 cm (49,6 inches). The canopy is 19,5 cm wide (7,7 inches).
I never saw this large model before. But the 25 cm wide version is more common. That one is never signed, and often antique dealers falsely offer them as Sabino.
The pendant is in excellent condition. I re-nickeled and patinated the fixture. And it is rewired holding an American standard socket. The pendant is 126 cm high but if you want I can easily shorten the rods, see the last picture as example.
Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first world war Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in molded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J. Robert pseudonym for J. Gauthier based on the street name of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.
FREE SHIPPING OFFERED.
