Direct from the Brittany region of France, a lovely antique French ‘confiturier’ or jam cabinet. These cabinets are one of our most requested antiques, as they have so many uses in today’s home; from a vanity in the bath, to the kitchen, the foyer with a mirror above, as a wine/liquor cabinet in any room…just imagine the possibilities!
Highly carved, in true Brittany style, with a detailed, dimensionally carved panel depicting a man and lady, in period dress, at a water well, with cobblestone wall, fields to the background and carved trees above.
Hand carved bandings surround the door panel, with a carved serpentine apron having a carved center ‘ship’s wheel’. Carvings on both sides, well made by craftsmen of the period, c1890.
Note: The Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France are manifest in the furniture produced in this region. The Breton style is as distinctive as its special culture and easily recognizable due to its very ornate carvings. A hallmark feature is the symbolic use of men and women in traditional Celtic dress to represent a strong work ethic, piety, and the enjoyment of life. The local economy in Brittany was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime activities, so one often finds circles and ship's wheels as a common decorative motif. Typically, the furniture is carved out of chestnut or oak, with a dark finish.
Measurements: 39.5” ht. x 28” x 16”.
NOTE: All of our antiques are direct from Europe. I personally select each item for the quality, design and unique characteristics that you will always find in our distinctive inventory at Geaux Vintage Antiques. …” with all that, why ‘Geaux’ anywhere else?” … less
