This is an absolutely beautiful oil on linen canvas painting by Ukranian-American Post Impressionist painter Mischa Askenazy (1888-1961) titled "Vase with Flowers". It is signed "M. Askenazy" in lower left and sold UNFRAMED. The provenance we were given on this painting is that it was a gift from the late Norton Simon in Pasadena California. A remarkable work of art by a much sought after California painter. Likely done 1920-1930. Valued at $3500+. A must-have for the serious collector.

About the Artist: Born near Odessa, Russia (now Ukraine) on Feb. 22, 1888. At age four Askenazy (né Ashkenazy) arrived in NYC where he spent his childhood. Opting for an art career, he studied at the NAD under Jones, Volk, and Maynard; upon winning a scholarship, he traveled in France and Italy for two years. During the 1920s he averaged $50,000 per year as a portraitist to the wealthy. A portrait commission brought him to Montecito, CA in 1925 and, charmed by the climate, he decided to settle in Los Angeles. He painted there until his demise on July 13, 1961. His works, which show the influence of Cézanne, include portraits, figure studies, still lifes, and landscapes. Exh: Calif.
