A exceptional 19th century Louis XVI style cheval dressing mirror handcrafted of walnut, circa 1880s, having the original beveled mirror inside a beautifully carved walnut frame featuring typical neoclassical motifs from the period. The carved crest depicts the royal symbols of Louis XVI. The arrows of justice crossed with a flaming torch of truth are joined by trailing ribbon. The flaming torch is an ancient symbol of life, truth and the regenerative power of fire while the quiver of arrows signifies the ability to use force in the pursuit of justice. By using these symbols from the past, Louis XVI was making a conscious choice to ally himself with their powerful meanings. The whole antique mirror bounded by egg and dart moulding with the inner border having a carved twisted ribbon. Supported on carved and fluted pillars with carved acanthus leaves to the base. Joined by a turned stretcher. A wonderful mirror giving you a full length view that can be tilted to just the right angle you need. The back is covered in pleated fabric so it can float in a room if necessary. Very stable base.
Free standing mirrors in the form of a smaller tilting design weren't invented until the late 17th Century. Known as a toilet mirror, these antique mirrors were very small and made to sit on top of a side table or commode. Antique cheval mirrors were first produced in Paris during the 19th century. A larger design inspired by the smaller toilet mirrors, cheval mirrors are free standing mirrors that can be full length in height, ideal to see your entire outfit when getting dressed. The word "cheval" means horse in French, and the name given to the mirror refers to its four supporting legs.
