Incredible Mid Century Art Protis Robert Freimark Wool Wall Tapestry
Robert Freimark (1922 - 2010). Abstract Expressionist Painter, Teacher.
This tapestry is absolutely incredible.
Relevant content and superbly crafted.
As a textile designer I am floored at the process it took to create this piece of ageless art.
ART PROTIS was a new technology born in the late 1950's at the Wool Research Institute in Czechoslovakia, that went on to influence textile art and fashion for decades.
Protis, made partly of woolen, fairly sparse and loose fabric, and partly of loose fill-fleece was joined using stitching equipment similar to a knitting machine, where these two layers were knitted together.
The result is a magnificent tapestry that blurs the lines of comprehension - no stitches, all woven and incredibly elaborate with depth and meaning.
Excellent Condition.
Original laced hanging ribbons, backed with it's original pure lining with all signature tags untouched.
Has been stored and wrapped to preserve it's condition.

Art Protis was artistically developed by famous Czech artists Jiří Trnka and Antonín Kybal, Non woven tapestries by first preparing wool which comes in raw sheets dyed in different colors. The prepared wool is then cut to pieces and placed on top of one another like a collage. The finished layers were then pressed through a machine and stitched together on to a canvas. Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, French artist James Coignard, American Robert Freimark and Australian Erroll B. Davis Amongst many others.
