The world of lighting design is one that has developed extensively over time. Major changes to designers’ approach can be seen during the years of Art-Deco straight through the Mid-Century era. Lighting design today is a primarily sculptural discipline allowing for a multitude of possibilities when imagining lighting forms. With this brilliant piece from c. 1970, a pair of cast brass hands offer an orb of warm light. This humanist design was far ahead of its time thus it remains relevant to this day.
This accent lamp is rarely seen and not much is known of its history or designer. It is however a piece filled with intrigue which only deepens upon further inspection. Each cast brass hand looks to have been originally moulded from an actual human hand as there are subtle differences between the two. The castings have been mirror polished and currently show light signs of rich patina from age. The hands are mounted on a polished black marble base which offsets the yellow brass extremely well. Placed into the palms of each hand is a frosted glass globe which attractively diffuses light into the room. The assemblage of materials is not only attractive, but timeless.
This lamp remains in its original condition with minor wear consistent with age and history. It is fully functional and equipped with an inline rotary switch. Its petite scale allows for it to be placed in any environment such as an end table, desk, or perhaps a reading nook. Although very well sized, the use of bold materials are sure to be noticed and undoubtedly delight those who do. less
