"The Storm We Weathered" is a moody oil painting by Hudson Valley based contemporary artist, Monica Shulman. It explores themes of self-reflection, the human condition, and identity and was one of the first paintings Monica made in her studio after the lockdown of 2020. Monica uses her materials, specifically thick layers of oil paint and oil pastel, as an active participant in the paintings that explore a yearning to connect with each other after living in an extended period of isolation. It is inspired by all the ways people were trying to connect with each other after being isolated due to the pandemic.
An intuitive painter, Monica uses which ever medium will best help her express her ideas and in this piece she explores the various shades and values found in nature by using texture and layers with oil paint.Punctuating her rhythmic, gestural marks with varying shades of blue, pink, green, blue, purple and yellow, Monica creates a vivid and energetic painting that will add dimension, depth and a pop of color to any space.
Monica has been featured in various publications including Popular Photography, Create magazine, and the Huffington Post. In 2019 she was named "Best Artist" in Westchester by Westchester magazine. Her work has been shown at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City, Photo LA, Art Market Hamptons, PULSE Art Fair, and the New York Mercantile Exchange, among others.
***PLEASE NOTE: Due to its size, this painting, made on Belgium linen, ships unmounted and ROLLED. It can be easily stretched (and framed, if preferred) by a framer. It can be hung either vertically or horizontally as Buyer prefers. The linen canvas is painted all the way to the edge and there is plenty of extra canvas for stapling around the sides and back. Alternatively, the painting can be mounted rather than stretched - it is Buyer's choice.
