PIERRE D'AVESN for Lorrain Daum
A rare pair of French 1930 art deco lamps in nickel plated solid brass or … more PIERRE D'AVESN for Lorrain Daum
A rare pair of French 1930 art deco lamps in nickel plated solid brass or bronze holding beautiful, oversized shades. The lamps are made by Lorrain verrerie de belle étoile. Several important Lorrain pieces in molded-pressed glass were signed d'Avesn.
Both shades are signed "P. d'AVESN France". The lamps are 19,3 cm (7,6") high and the shades have a diameter 18 cm (7,09"). This model is represented in the old Lorrain catalogs. Lorrain sold the shades also as complete lamp like the ones on offer here. And they had a version as vase: the same base as the lamps with a similar d'Avesn shade but in smoke glass that is closed at the bottom. See catalog pictures, the catalogs are of course no part of this sale.
The lamps are in very good condition. I have re-nickeled the bases and they come rewired with an American candelabra base socket and US 2-prong plug. For European countries I will place E14 sockets.
On Lorrain: In 1926 the famous Daum glass manufacturers opened a new plant in the village of Croismare near Luneville. A year later it started a production of pressed glassware. The new company 'Les Verreries d'Art Lorrain" merged with the one Daum already owned in this village "Les verreries de belle étoile". For these plants the Daum company employed the well-known designer Pierre d'Avesn , who till that time worked for René Lalique. d'Avesn stayed in office till the Lorrain branch closed down in 1934. Some prestigious Lorrain models were signed P.d'Avesn like the bowl of this lamp. After the bankruptcy of Lorrain d'Avesn became the director of the Hanots/Verlys glass manufactory of the Holophane company.
